What We Do
Five Fifty Two provides cooking demonstrations, and fun physical activities to youth and families improving health, education and the opportunity to live healthy and active lifestyles.
How We Do It
In classrooms, after school programs, senior centers, hospitals, and with sports organizations, we implement nutrition and physical education by incorporating kinesthetic application of knowledge through presentations, handouts, healthy food demonstrations, recipe tips, and fun interaction. Nutrition education done well can reduce weight gain, encourage an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption; which has been proven to increase cognitive functioning academically in school aged children.
Physical activity and cooking demonstrations provide for a better learning experience, and stimulates interest in the learning process for participants. For example, providing cooking classes to youth and their families allows them to try healthy foods and engage in hands on learning; such as slicing, smelling and preparing cold and or hot foods using fresh fruits and vegetables. These tactile experiences also decrease food neophobia (food fear) and greater acceptance of eating a variety of fresh fruits and veggies and overall a balanced meal.
We distribute evidence based curriculum and instruction to participants as well as intervention materials and resources; and in turn participants are encouraged to apply this knowledge to their lifestyles and share it with their communities. Our trained volunteers include college students and community members with over 60 hours in nutrition and physical education.
Research shows a continuum of education programs can have an impact on families and communities. Our programs play an important role in encouraging physical activity and good dietary habits. Participation in community and afterschool programs has been associated with positive health outcomes, including but not limited to a reduction in childhood obesity rates. Our education programs are divided into three seasons consisting of eight weeks in the Fall; eight weeks in the Spring; and eight weeks during the Summer.
Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975.
With nutrition education, urban gardening, food demonstrations, adult health classes, and youth yoga, underserved communities are equipped to embrace and maintain healthy lifestyles.
