Five Fifty Two

Five Fifty Two is a nutritional education program that was developed by Ashley Moore in 2016 with the intention to provide people with education about obesity and dietary related illness and to empower them to adopt healthy habits for better health. In 2012, after studying nutrition at Prairie View A&M University she began educating people in lower socioeconomic communities about food nutrition, diabetes, childhood obesity and overall health and wellness. While working in the field it became clear to her that there were several critical areas of need in economically disadvantaged communities. One being that there is little access to local fresh foods and a general lack of knowledge among community members in how to prepare such foods in a healthy way. Secondly, she saw the increase of fast foods options in those areas; but in contrast there were minimal recreational activities for families to engage in. Based on those observations she concluded that such an environment increased the propensity for childhood obesity, and other generational health related illnesses, such as high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Ashley was inspired to create Five Fifty- Two in 2016 after the passing of her “Aunt Sherry” from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Her Aunt struggled with childhood obesity which carried over into adulthood leading to high blood pressure, kidney failure, and finally ESRD.  Along with her family, Ashley had to helplessly witness “Aunt Sherry” endure the trials of dialysis, countless hospitalizations, and even a partial leg amputation. Now Ashley is on a mission to educate people about obesity due to poor nutrition and food choices and how they relate to dietary illnesses. Five Fifty- Two is founded on the fundamentals of the biblical verse Isaiah 55:2, which encourages the practicality of having a healthy mind, body, and soul. Through a practical approach of healthy food selection and living an active lifestyle Ashley believes we can protect ourselves and future generations from the negative impacts of poor nutrition, and the impacts of obesity.
