Sustainable gardening has been a way of life for many in urban settings for years. Now as we begin to look at the effects of global warming and the high climatic cost associated with shipping goods over the country, communities have begun to embrace more sustainable gardening efforts. There are several benefits to gardening such as support for local small food producers; having access to fresh in seasons produce; more access to fresh and affordable foods; reduction in the number of urban area food deserts; and finally engaging in more dialog with policy makers. The overall goal is to create nutritionally self-sufficient communities with access to local secure and sustainable health resources.
